Show Notes

My guest is South African, Richard Hay. He is finalizing his MSc in Agronomy at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. He attributes his interests in science, mainly agricultural, to his childhood, where he grew up on his grandfather farm, who was a qualified plant breeder. Richard believes that there needs to be a change in the mindset that agriculture is not a "complex science. " He believes that social media can be a tool to change this stigma. In this episode, we learn about his master's research that examines how small-scale and emerging commercial farmers are using social media to connect and share information. The study also looks at how researchers can use the platforms for effective science communication.  Richard further elaborates that there is a huge need for these online platforms as the small-scale are hungry for the information that is relevant to them about the theory of agricultural science to upskill themselves. To find out more about this research and the root of Richard's science, do stay tuned.
