Mbali Gwacela is a South African, studying and lecturing at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). In 2019 she was the recipient of the "Wonder Women in Science" award by UKZN and was termed "The Accidental Scientist." In this episode, she explains that she initially had no plans of getting into the science field as she was in Social science. She entered the agricultural science field in her honors program and has since stayed. Mbali explains she adjusted into the science due to her hard work ethic and always aspiring to do her best. Currently, she's a doctoral candidate and discusses her study that examines the local food system, particularly community food production and consumption.
Furthermore, Mbali explains the situation in her PhD journey that forced her to change supervisors three times. She advises other postgrads on the supervisors/student relationship. Lastly, we talk about how she deals with her mental health due to the constant pressures of always feeling like she needs to do well, especially when external factors such as family crisis or the pandemic that we are all experiencing happens.
