EP 37: Rivoningo Khosa- Junior Research Scientist and PhD Student in Geology

 My guest today is Rivoningo Khosa, she's from Limpopo, South Africa and now based in Johannesburg. In this episode, we learn how she got into the field of geology with the help of a friend, 10years later she has not looked back. Currently, she is a PhD student in geology at the Human Evolution Research Institute at the University of Cape Town. Her research work is a continuation of her Masters. The research focuses on trying to understand the erosion of fluvial systems in South Africa, particularly in the arid region. The Masters work focused on understanding the erosion rates between rocks along the Vaal River in the Vredefort Dome. The Vaal River flows into the Orange River (the biggest river in the country) and as a continuation study, she wants to investigate whether the results observed in the same fluvial basin are translated further down. Rivoningo tells us more about this work and the importance of linking to the United Nations sustainable development goals. We dig a little deeper about the field of geology to learn more about the best part of being in the field and the opportunities avaible which is more than "working in the mine".  Lastly, Rivoningo opens up and tells us about a time during her early academic career where she failed and had to start her degree from scratch. She attributes overcoming that failure and succeeding to the help of her family as they have been so important in her getting to this stage of her life. Tune in
