00:03:47 Anne Chisa
Hi Guana, welcome to the show.
00:03:50 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Thank you and thank you for bringing me to your show.
00:03:53 Gwana Jusline Akoh
It is a pleasure to be here today.
00:03:55 Anne Chisa
It is a pleasure to have you on the show.
00:03:58 Anne Chisa
OK, so First things first, let's get an introduction.
00:04:02 Anne Chisa
Who is Guana, where you from and just briefly where?
00:04:05 Anne Chisa
Are you based?
00:04:09 Gwana Jusline Akoh
OK, my name is Guana Jocelyn.
00:04:12 Gwana Jusline Akoh
I am a Cameroonian.
00:04:14 Gwana Jusline Akoh
I currently live in Cameroon precisely in the Southwest region of Cameroon in Boya.
00:04:22 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So I am an affiliate marketer, a digital marketer, a graphic designer, a.
00:04:30 Gwana Jusline Akoh
And currently a third year computer engineering student at the University of Boyer, not the Faculty of Engineering and Technology.
00:04:40 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Specialize in networking.
00:04:43 Anne Chisa
OK, fantastic.
00:04:45 Anne Chisa
Some really exciting stuff.
00:04:47 Anne Chisa
Before we get into the sciences, you mentioned that you are a graphic designer, a typist or your other roles, and in your graphic design, you also said that you help improve brand identities of businesses.
00:05:02 Anne Chisa
So can you tell us briefly about some of these roles and how you actually got involved in?
00:05:07 Anne Chisa
Doing this work.
00:05:11 Gwana Jusline Akoh
OK, first of all, what prompted me to to become or to learn graphic design if my hobbies are photography, I love taking a lot of pictures, so I also love colors, so have fun fun.
00:05:26 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Combining colors.
00:05:27 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So I decided to learn this as a side hustle for me to get money.
00:05:32 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Also as a skill to couple it with my engineering because I also have a.
00:05:39 Gwana Jusline Akoh
A passion in UI and UX design.
00:05:45 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So graphic designing is all about communication and means of communication.
00:05:51 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Visual communication where you combine shapes, images, pictures to convey an intended message to an audience.
00:06:01 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So there are different new disciplines of graphic design.
00:06:04 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Some of those disciplines advertisement, design, logo design, web design and so on.
00:06:11 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So I mean mention of branding.
00:06:14 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So branding here is it is the face.
00:06:18 Gwana Jusline Akoh
In which an audience will recognize a businessman.
00:06:23 Gwana Jusline Akoh
It is what in fact branding is a logo.
00:06:28 Gwana Jusline Akoh
It is the logo of a businessman.
00:06:31 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So branding.
00:06:32 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Yeah, it is the the unique thing about a business card.
00:06:38 Gwana Jusline Akoh
It is a unique thing you have like a business, that when an audience is, you know the the, the individual will know that it is this.
00:06:46 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Yes, this is it.
00:06:47 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Is this business man's own?
00:06:50 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So you have to have a consistency.
00:06:54 Gwana Jusline Akoh
In your business, maybe you you your your logo is made-up of some primary colors like red and yellow.
00:07:02 Gwana Jusline Akoh
You should make sure that they should be consistent in your design.
00:07:06 Gwana Jusline Akoh
That is, in any of your design, whether in the marketing department layer, any other thing you should have those unique colors for.
00:07:15 Gwana Jusline Akoh
The main design which is your logo that shows your brand that that that indicates to an audience that every time they see this color or this kind of images, it shows that this is from your come.
00:07:30 Anne Chisa
Yeah, that makes sense. That makes a lot of sense. I think when you think of all the global brands off the top of my head, Coca-Cola, you think read automatically and you think of how they write things. So that's very true. I wanted to ask you, how long have you been doing this work?
00:07:48 Anne Chisa
The side hustle.
00:07:49 Gwana Jusline Akoh
OK, I've been doing this for this will be making five months, five months. I just started learning it in 2023 in September.
00:07:57 Anne Chisa
OK.
00:08:02 Anne Chisa
Ohh OK, so it's still something in the infancy in the infancy.
00:08:06 Anne Chisa
And of course the more you do it, the better the the better you get during this.
00:08:12 Anne Chisa
OK.
00:08:12 Anne Chisa
You mentioned though that you always been this creative type of person.
00:08:16 Anne Chisa
You mentioned that you like photography, etc.
00:08:20 Anne Chisa
Have you always been this type of creative?
00:08:22 Anne Chisa
Lesson because of course with brand design and graphic design, you have to be very creative, right?
00:08:31 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Yes, I've.
00:08:32 Gwana Jusline Akoh
I've always been a creative person.
00:08:35 Gwana Jusline Akoh
But the issue I had was I had let me say I can picture something in my mind.
00:08:43 Gwana Jusline Akoh
The issue I had was I didn't have the devices to do that at first.
00:08:47 Gwana Jusline Akoh
I used to do graphic design just using my mobile phone.
00:08:51 Gwana Jusline Akoh
I downloaded some softwares for it which to become a good graphic designer.
00:08:57 Gwana Jusline Akoh
You cannot.
00:08:58 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Depend only on your.
00:09:01 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Mobile phone.
00:09:02 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So when I got my PC so that tells to improve my level of designs.
00:09:10 Anne Chisa
You've obviously decided that this is something that you want to focus on, and I honestly wish you all of the best and this new endeavor of yours.
00:09:21 Anne Chisa
Now let's find out about, you know, your journey into science, right?
00:09:27 Anne Chisa
Was this something that you always knew?
00:09:30 Anne Chisa
You wanted to do?
00:09:32 Anne Chisa
How did this come about?
00:09:34 Anne Chisa
How did?
00:09:34 Anne Chisa
You get into science.
00:09:38 Gwana Jusline Akoh
OK, first of all, in my junior in my junior years in secondary school, like in the lower classes like Form 1.
00:09:48 Gwana Jusline Akoh
I didn't know anything about sciences.
00:09:51 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So it was depending now on my teachers to selective because in my school they the teachers tend to select the most intelligent student.
00:10:01 Gwana Jusline Akoh
To go to the sciences and maybe the less intelligent students or students who are not capable enough and they send them to the art background.
00:10:10 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So because I was performing better in most of the science subjects like mathematics, physics, just science, chemistry.
00:10:20 Gwana Jusline Akoh
I was selected to move to the science subject, then my brain was naive and small.
00:10:26 Gwana Jusline Akoh
When I got to Pompidou was when.
00:10:29 Gwana Jusline Akoh
That was when I got an open brain.
00:10:32 Gwana Jusline Akoh
He held a seminar, was held in my school.
00:10:36 Gwana Jusline Akoh
A seminar was held in my school.
00:10:37 Gwana Jusline Akoh
When I was informed by the team of the of the seminar was encouraging more women into STEM, I was encouraged by one of the.
00:10:49 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Speaker 5 speakers.
00:10:50 Gwana Jusline Akoh
But there was one speaker who was a lady.
00:10:53 Gwana Jusline Akoh
She was young, she was energetic and she was already a computer engineer.
00:10:58 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So she said a lot of things that did that inspired me so, so much.
00:11:03 Gwana Jusline Akoh
And coupled with the fact.
00:11:05 Gwana Jusline Akoh
I'm good in the science subject.
00:11:07 Gwana Jusline Akoh
I'm not really, really.
00:11:10 Gwana Jusline Akoh
In fact, I perform averagely in the arts, but I was good in mathematics, in physics, in computer science, in chemistry.
00:11:19 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So then the that was the beginning of my that was when I decided that.
00:11:25 Gwana Jusline Akoh
No, I have a I have to take it to pick up if you in saying that was my secondary school life.
00:11:32 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So from there I wrote my whole levels.
00:11:35 Gwana Jusline Akoh
I went in for 10 papers.
00:11:37 Gwana Jusline Akoh
I had all the 10 I went to high school.
00:11:41 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So now in high school you have to decide, are you going to the art?
00:11:45 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Department ought to the science department.
00:11:48 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So since I was already good, my teachers had had detected that I'm good in the science and I myself too.
00:11:55 Gwana Jusline Akoh
I know this and I saw that I'm better.
00:11:58 Gwana Jusline Akoh
I'm even.
00:11:59 Gwana Jusline Akoh
I'm excellent in the science object, so I decided to pick up.
00:12:04 Gwana Jusline Akoh
A science in the high school which was physics, mathematics, further mathematics.
00:12:12 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Computer science and computer science and the computer and those were five subject.
00:12:19 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So that was high school for me when I attended high school for two years and I rode the advanced level which I made it in five papers.
00:12:27 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So then.
00:12:29 Gwana Jusline Akoh
I was a little bit confused.
00:12:32 Gwana Jusline Akoh
What career path am I going to take as I'll be as I'm moving to the university?
00:12:39 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So I was opportune to get in touch with some elderly people.
00:12:44 Gwana Jusline Akoh
I called a mentor that spoke to me.
00:12:46 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Quote to me.
00:12:48 Gwana Jusline Akoh
That open my brain on a lot of things and and from there from what they said and also from my research I made a lot of researches about the different fields in science and science and so I decided to.
00:13:04 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Pick up computer engineering at a carrier.
00:13:08 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So first of all, here in Cameroon, for you to attain a professional school to study computer engineering in a professional school, you have to go through a competitive entrance exam so that I went in for, I succeeded.
00:13:19 Anne Chisa
OK.
00:13:23 Gwana Jusline Akoh
That was how I found myself.
00:13:25 Gwana Jusline Akoh
I found myself admitted to the professional.
00:13:28 Gwana Jusline Akoh
To call faculty of Engineering and Technology under the University of Boya.
00:13:33 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So that was my first year into into the field of engineering the first year of my university.
00:13:41 Gwana Jusline Akoh
It was not easy.
00:13:43 Anne Chisa
Yes, I can imagine.
00:13:43 Gwana Jusline Akoh
It was tough.
00:13:44 Gwana Jusline Akoh
I had some difficult.
00:13:46 Gwana Jusline Akoh
I had some I had some had difficulties in programming, hard, difficult difficulties in managing my time.
00:13:54 Gwana Jusline Akoh
I had difficulties in adapting to, adapting to the school system.
00:14:02 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So in so in my first year I had a lot of difficulties understanding programming, adapting to the system because in the high school my years in the high.
00:14:14 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So I know that we go to school from morning to evening.
00:14:18 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Your your parents, they give you everything, you protect you.
00:14:21 Gwana Jusline Akoh
But when I went to invest.
00:14:22 Gwana Jusline Akoh
I had to move away from my parents, so adapting to the lifestyle of taking care of yourself, going for lectures from morning to evening, managing everything on your own.
00:14:35 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So I had some difficulties with doing that for my first year understanding some courses, but with the advice to a mentor that I I had an opportunity to come in contact with and that is mistake.
00:14:52 Gwana Jusline Akoh
She spoke to me a lot.
00:14:54 Gwana Jusline Akoh
She she spoke to me about a lot of things.
00:14:56 Gwana Jusline Akoh
She advised me on how to take things easily and steadily.
00:15:00 Gwana Jusline Akoh
That should be consistent that even if it is tough, I shouldn't be.
00:15:04 Gwana Jusline Akoh
But so that was when I accepted to get some courage to keep on moving.
00:15:09 Gwana Jusline Akoh
And my second year.
00:15:10 Gwana Jusline Akoh
In the engineering field, I got used to to the system.
00:15:16 Gwana Jusline Akoh
I knew how the lecture lectures the the settings in the set exam, so when the lecturer gives the course I would like, I tend to do further research in making things easy for me.
00:15:28 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So I think my grade improved from.
00:15:31 Gwana Jusline Akoh
In the second year, better than that or the first year and currently now I'm in my third, I'm in my third year and everything is going better and better.
00:15:43 Gwana Jusline Akoh
And while in the university I attended a lot of things.
00:15:48 Gwana Jusline Akoh
He gave me.
00:15:49 Gwana Jusline Akoh
I joined some organization that that showed me.
00:15:52 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Opportunities that I could connect and engage with.
00:15:55 Gwana Jusline Akoh
People through both camps.
00:15:58 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Through coding CAMS coding competitions, so those are some of the things that I was so fortunate to do while in the university.
00:16:09 Anne Chisa
That's great.
00:16:10 Anne Chisa
That's great.
00:16:11 Anne Chisa
I love.
00:16:11 Anne Chisa
I love how you spoke.
00:16:13 Anne Chisa
You've been so honest about your journey, in particular, about how that transition from coming from university to sorry, coming from a high school to a university setting and, you know, moving away from home and how all of those things.
00:16:29 Anne Chisa
Also, transcend to your performance and.
00:16:34 Anne Chisa
I love the fact that you also have people who you can rely on, mentors like Kate shout out to Kate because she's the one who actually connected us as well.
00:16:43 Anne Chisa
So to have people like that who can.
00:16:48 Anne Chisa
Who can who can?
00:16:49 Anne Chisa
Who can tell you to hold on, who are ahead and they understand what you're going through?
00:16:54 Anne Chisa
And sometimes you know, you can sit by yourself and you think, Oh my goodness, this is so horrible and you're sitting in a corner without getting any assistance while they can.
00:17:04 Anne Chisa
People who can actually help you.
00:17:06 Anne Chisa
So it's always so good to to have people like that.
00:17:11 Anne Chisa
So I'm interested.
00:17:13 Anne Chisa
Actually, I wanted to find out.
00:17:15 Anne Chisa
You're saying that you're doing computer engineering.
00:17:18 Anne Chisa
Right?
00:17:19 Anne Chisa
Does that mean I've never?
00:17:21 Anne Chisa
I've I've heard of engineering like and I'm sure others who are listening.
00:17:25 Anne Chisa
They know of mechanical engineering or chemical engineering, and when you think of computer, I don't know.
00:17:32 Anne Chisa
I think of I just think of pure computer sciences, for example.
00:17:35 Anne Chisa
So I've never heard computer engineering.
00:17:38 Anne Chisa
What exactly do you?
00:17:40 Anne Chisa
And what is that OK computer.
00:17:45 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Computer engineering, when you hear of computer engine, it does not just mean that you study just computer.
00:17:51 Gwana Jusline Akoh
It is a combination of science. It is a combination of mathematics, physics and computer science that made-up computer engineering.
00:18:02 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Yes, so.
00:18:05 Gwana Jusline Akoh
The main thing we we study in school is is physics, mathematics and computer science how to use the knowledge that we gain in school to develop things that will be helpful to associes computer engineering has three main branches.
00:18:23 Gwana Jusline Akoh
We have software engineering, we have.
00:18:25 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Telecom engineering and we have network engineering.
00:18:30 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Where under each of those sub branches you can specialize, you can pick up a specialty under.
00:18:38 Gwana Jusline Akoh
There's so many of them under each of you.
00:18:42 Anne Chisa
Oh, that's interesting.
00:18:43 Anne Chisa
You see, I learned something new today, and I'm sure because when I was like, oh, computer engineering.
00:18:48 Anne Chisa
So which one?
00:18:49 Anne Chisa
Do you like in?
00:18:50 Anne Chisa
Terms of those 3 sub subsets, which ones do you like?
00:18:54 Anne Chisa
Because of course you have to have a favorite today.
00:18:59 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Yeah, that is network and socializing.
00:19:01 Anne Chisa
What exactly?
00:19:02
Do you do?
00:19:04 Anne Chisa
Yes, go ahead.
00:19:06 Gwana Jusline Akoh
And specializing to be a network administrator.
00:19:11 Anne Chisa
And what does that mean?
00:19:14 Gwana Jusline Akoh
OK, this has been the the.
00:19:17 Gwana Jusline Akoh
For example, maybe there exists a company they have so many many computers they they're supposed to be a central computer, not as the the server that controls all the activities that that monitors and control all the activities of other computers in the should engage.
00:19:36 Gwana Jusline Akoh
There is a network.
00:19:38 Gwana Jusline Akoh
A person they are going to call to come and configure, maybe routers or switches to improve the network.
00:19:45 Gwana Jusline Akoh
If the network administrator.
00:19:47 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So that's where the network administrator.
00:19:50 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Those in your company.
00:19:52 Anne Chisa
Oh, yes, OK.
00:19:53 Anne Chisa
That makes a lot of sense now.
00:19:55 Anne Chisa
Interesting work one.
00:19:56 Anne Chisa
That's that's really exciting.
00:19:58 Anne Chisa
So apart from that also, apart from your studies, you've also developed or rather you're working on a project on a smart security lightning system which helps raise the alarm when there's an intruder.
00:20:13 Anne Chisa
At night in people's homes when installed.
00:20:16 Anne Chisa
This is quite interesting.
00:20:17 Anne Chisa
Tell me more about this and how.
00:20:19 Anne Chisa
This came about.
00:20:22 Gwana Jusline Akoh
OK, a smart security lighting system.
00:20:28 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Is a system that is controlled remotely with connected devices.
00:20:34 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So the main goal of this project was to design, implement and test an affordable system.
00:20:44 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Can be used.
00:20:45 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Can be used to detect intruders in a street or in a.
00:20:50 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Home during the night time.
00:20:53 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So this system, the main importance of it is to.
00:20:57 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Is to is to.
00:20:59 Gwana Jusline Akoh
To indicate to a house owner or to a business owner that there exists someone outside.
00:21:06 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So we build this.
00:21:07 Gwana Jusline Akoh
This system is built as a hard way as a hard man.
00:21:11 Gwana Jusline Akoh
We made use of so many things.
00:21:14 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Made use of sensors.
00:21:17 Gwana Jusline Akoh
These sensors collect physical physical events.
00:21:21 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Physical events could be a person passing by and converting physical events.
00:21:26 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Now into electrical signals.
00:21:30 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Busy signals now will be related to the server.
00:21:34 Gwana Jusline Akoh
And this will cause the security Board to turn on whenever there is a physical event which is a person passing by.
00:21:43 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So we discovered that this with this system there will be a lot of energy wasted wasted wasted wastage if we allow the system to work both in the daytime and in the night time.
00:21:56 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So we make use of light dependent resistors.
00:22:01 Gwana Jusline Akoh
This system will work only at night.
00:22:03 Gwana Jusline Akoh
It works only when there is darkness, that is when places.
00:22:08 Gwana Jusline Akoh
For example in when places are dark in, if somebody is approaching.
00:22:14 Gwana Jusline Akoh
The sensor should be able to detect within a distance of 150 meters.
00:22:20 Gwana Jusline Akoh
That there exists a physical event incoming.
00:22:24 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Convey this?
00:22:27 Gwana Jusline Akoh
To electric cars in line and relay it to the server to turn the light on.
00:22:32 Gwana Jusline Akoh
This is automatic and the automatic the the making you automatic will make use of programming.
00:22:39 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Now you see computer engineer comes in and knowledge your programming now comes in.
00:22:44 Gwana Jusline Akoh
We program this.
00:22:46 Gwana Jusline Akoh
In in my group with Julia.
00:22:49 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So that it should be automatic, it should not be achieved when you detect a set and so maybe you take somebody that go and underline there somebody there you could.
00:22:59 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So now this bulb, it could either be a bulb or an alarm.
00:23:04 Gwana Jusline Akoh
That when he detected as an intruder the alarm going to alert the owner or the owner, owner, the owner, that there is someone passing by, there is someone.
00:23:14 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Maybe the pain could be a king thing to occur just in the night.
00:23:21 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So that was it for the project.
00:23:23 Anne Chisa
That's so interesting and very important work.
00:23:27 Anne Chisa

00:23:50 Gwana Jusline Akoh
You should have lived with the problem in the future.
00:23:55 Anne Chisa

00:23:57 Anne Chisa
OK, so Speaking of the future, you are very young, bright, intelligent African women in the sciences.
00:24:05 Anne Chisa
Where do you see yourself in the future after you've completed this?
00:24:10 Anne Chisa
What is the vision for yourself?
00:24:14 Gwana Jusline Akoh
OK.
00:24:15 Gwana Jusline Akoh
After completing my my I wish to go for the.
00:24:22 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Into masters.
00:24:24 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So that I am a specialist in network administration.
00:24:30 Gwana Jusline Akoh
And also I hope to to lead or encourage many other younger people who have interest in them.
00:24:42 Gwana Jusline Akoh
To pick up a car, we are in Spain because from my own feeling I feel that the world is becoming more digital.
00:24:51 Gwana Jusline Akoh
And Africa as a whole don't seem to embrace it.
00:24:55 Gwana Jusline Akoh
There are so many youths who are of.
00:24:57 Gwana Jusline Akoh
My age, who are younger?
00:24:58 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Than me, who are even older than me, that don't even know how to manipulate an Android phone well.
00:25:03 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So I wish to bring them closer to everybody.
00:25:07 Gwana Jusline Akoh
Write some like I wish to go and talk him into the junior ones who are in primary school in secondary school in high school.
00:25:15 Gwana Jusline Akoh
About them as a whole and also we should encourage parents to expose their children to technology by buying their children, toys, toys, electric toys or phones, computers.
00:25:26 Gwana Jusline Akoh
And their ways.
00:25:27 Gwana Jusline Akoh
So one of the things aspire as we should be also a speaker that will lead people and encourage people to join.
00:25:40 Anne Chisa
Exciting and definitely very important.
00:25:43 Anne Chisa
You're right that the world is becoming very digital and it's important to get young people or just people in general to be more aware of the sciences and the technology.
