EP 43: Aviwe Matiwane- PhD Candidate in Paleobotony

 My guest today is Aviwe Matiwane from Eastern Cape in South Africa. She's a Paleobotonist based at the Albany Museum. In this episode, we learn that she is a "dog mommy" and is her "grandparents child". This played a crucial role in her love and for knowledge for plants. She got into Paleobotony after volunteering at the Albany Museum. Currently, Aviwe is a PhD student at Rhodes University in South Africa. Her work involves finding the best descriptive features to identify and name Glossopteris. Aviwe gives us some context by telling us what is Glossopteris and the importance of this work. She is an avid nature enthusiast and science communicator, in fact, is known as the “plant detective" and runs the “Fossil Friday” campaign on Twitter and, she tells us about this. Aviwe informs us that in South Africa there are only 3 Paleobotonist in the country and she speaks about the importance of science researchers sharing their research to get other people aware of opportunities available for them.
